Biblical Book Reviews: Ecclesiastes

A few years ago, I was at a Bible study that covered part of Ecclesiastes. At the time, I felt it was the most overwhelmingly depressing thing I had read.

The key themes of Ecclesiastes is that life is futile and to fear God. There’s also a healthy reminder that life (on this world) can be unjust eg (Ecc 10:6 “Fools are put in many high positions, while the rich occupy the low ones.”

2007 was an annus horribilus for myself and many other people. So maybe that’s why I see Ecclesiastes as pointing out the sad state of the world we live in more than being depressing.

Anyway, a friend of mine once expressed that he felt Christians wasted their efforts on social justice issues that don’t include evangelism. I think I almost became a nihilist after 2007. Part of me just doesn’t care anymore since at some stage of our lives, we’re going to have to deal with misery on some level. Yes, everyone. I just can’t care about people killing each other for coltan.

Ecclesiastes ends with this:

13 Now all has been heard;
here is the conclusion of the matter:
Fear God and keep his commandments,
for this is the whole duty of man.

14 For God will bring every deed into judgment,
including every hidden thing,
whether it is good or evil.

It’s not an ending that seems overwhelmingly joyous, is it? Yet, I think it is comforting to know there will be justice in the end for everyone.

PS: My brain is too tired to think but read this: Atheism and Child Abuse. It’s pretty interesting but my brain is too tired to tie these things together right now.

So wrong for so many reasons: Atheists start a porn for Bibles swap

I’m going to post the whole article because the advertising on the page is not appropriate to look at.

This whole scenario is just nasty and inappropriate. Surprisingly, the article doesn’t mention if there was any opposition from the university’s women’s groups or groups against sexual harassment.

Some atheists really feel morally superior when they can be upstanding citizens without the need for a book of rules such as the Bible. I guess you can’t generalize atheists, particularly this group and their “smut for smut” (their words) program. Wow. This is a really old story too. It’s just that it was only just posted on Fark recently.

Students Trade Bibles for Porn

Friday, December 2, 2005 Adjust font size:

SAN ANTONIO — A group of atheists at the University of Texas at San Antonio is putting a novel twist on the toys-for-guns programs run by many urban police departments. But instead of toys, they are handing out porn in exchange for bibles.

“We consider the bible to be a very negative force in the history of the world,” student Ryan Walker said. Walker is part of a student group that calls itself the Atheist Agenda.

Club members this week posted fliers promoting what they call the “Smut for Smut” campaign then set up a table in the student union to collect religious materials and pass out adult magazines such as Black Label and Playboy.

The group is not officially sanctioned by the university and has raised the ire of several religious organizations on campus.

“In my opinion, there are no atheists. There are fools,” Pastor Rick Hawkins of UTSA’s Family Praise Center said. “So, that would be foolish propaganda. I don’t know one believer that would take his Bible and turn it in for pornography.”

Hawkins obviously didn’t stop by the Atheist Agenda table, where several students had dropped off copies of the good book and walked away with skin mags.

Athiest Agenda isn’t the first student group to explore the idea of introducing porn to former bible toters. Members say they got the idea from students in Austin who ran a similar pro-porn drive.

Walker added that members thought it sounded like a creative way to exercise their freedom of speech.

Wife Swap: Atheist and Christian

Last night, I watched an episode of the USA version of Wife Swap only because they swapped the wife of a pastor with the wife of an Atheist who runs an Internet Radio program from home.

According to his website and Wikipedia entry, Reginald Finley (aka InfidelGuy) felt the ABC misrepresented his family. The show portrayed the father as a workaholic working 70+ hours per week and rarely spending time with his family; the mother as spending all day playing The Sims 2; the eldest son doing all the housework; the other children staying in daycare.

The program only really portrayed the negative aspects of the Stonerock family as being too God obsessed (particularly the pastor-father) and the niece who lived with the family as not having enough interaction with girls, particularly of her own age.

Besides all the arguing, there are lots of interesting things that happen. For example, the atheist wife (Amber) gets the Christian children some evolution-based home schooling and forces the pastor to pay $10 for a kid’s party every time he prays God - something he openly rebels, comparing his actions to that of Daniel. Amber complains that he isn’t following rules but really, he’s paying the $10. However, he draws the line at wearing a shirt that says “Ban God”.

The show does portray the week where the pastor’s wife (Kelly) takes control as a truly joyous time, particular when the son is allowed to relax and not do chores and when he actually spends time with his father. She also takes over the radio program for a week which leads to a loss of subscribers and… subsequently Reginald breaks down and cries, stating that he feels he’s been criticized too harshly by Kelly. Yet, you can see the son is losing his childhood with chores and a lack of fatherly love!

You can actually download MP3s of her program Bible Gal and a debate between the pastor and Reginald here. I think she does a really good job and Reginald gets pwned a bit by showing his frustration and lack of strong points.

Apparently this episode has created a lot of Net debate. Looking at another blog: here. I can’t help but think what is wrong with these Atheists:
Mr. Finley came off as stressed, a bit sensitive, but a committed and informed Atheist. What was remarkable about the Finleys is that their family problems appeared so, well, mainstream. Reginald Finley was presented as a man who labors at his computer 60-80 hours a week to keep the Infidelguy.com web site on line. He may well be a “workaholic,” but there is certainly nothing unusual or downright un-American here.

With lack of relationships like that, what chances will the family not split up?
